Due to rising demand in the international market on jute products, the country experienced significant increase in export earnings in the first eight months of the current fiscal year 2012-13, sources said.
Earnings from jute sacks and bags increased by over 35 per cent and those from jute yarn and twine increased by nearly 10 per cent during the period over those of the corresponding period. The country earned US $ 159.89 million from export of jute sacks and bags in this fiscal year, the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data showed.
The data also showed, earnings from jute yarn and twine marked $329.06 million during the period. Exporters are satisfied with the growing export of the country's second largest foreign currency earning sector after apparel.
"However, due to image crisis of Bangladesh and lack of adequate efforts from the government we cannot materialise the opportunity properly," said Mahfujul Huq, also chairman of the Bangladesh Jute Association (BJA). He also pointed out capital shortage of the exporters as another obstacle towards achieving potential growth of the sector.
"We have urged the government several times to make a block allocation of Tk 5.0 billion for the exporters of jute products, which, in turn, would increase earnings from the sector to a substantial extent," he added.
